Turn a blind eye to inconvenient truth. It is too upsetting. And ugly.

Better to stuff ourselves with more bread and circus. Let the ringmasters do their thing.

What's that you say -- the bread will stop coming and the circus will turn increasingly hideous?

We're all going to die anyway. Sooner or later doesn't matter. Life is for indulging the moment, with minimal effort.
