No google involved. And I have ad-blockers galore that draw angry popups from many sites.

There's no info in your post to say if you got there from a Google link, or have a VPN, or any number of things.

Some "soft paywalls" record how many free articles you have read and stop you with a "pay me" notice. They store that info in browser "cookies", so clearing cookies ( and history?) will reset the count. But you're situation sounds different.

Do check for malware, as you might have unintentionally hit the site too often or with some janky browser request (the malware).
