of the repression of activists for all issues back then. In many areas you had to be aware of who you were interacting with. I can remember activists trying to use a bulk mail permit to send out information to a community about meetings on issues and they would take them to the local Post Office for mailing. The Post Office would take them and your payment and then they would languish in the back and not get delivered until the day of the meeting or later and so it would blunt the turnout. Local activists would have unofficial "background checks" made on them by the local police and elected officials.
