In reply to the discussion: So, how can people really express their feelings about Kirk's death without getting fired or censored? [View all]CozyMystery
(689 posts)We took a train to Leipzig from Ramstein AFB. The train stopped at the border and men with guns got on. I was 8 years old; my sister was 6. The guns scared me. Everyone was nice to us. The Red Cross waited at the border for us to return from our visit -- so if my mom got arrested, my sister and I would be returned to our father.
The part that scared me the most was how frequently my sister and I were warned about how to behave. We were not allowed to speak about the USA, the USAF, in English, or about money or anything about our belongings. The belongings thing was because the East Germans had nothing that we took for granted. Back then, packages could be sent, and our Christmas box to Oma and the few other relatives was full of necessities because of that.
All of the adults were worried about whether my mom would get arrested. So was I. It was my job (as I saw it) to protect my sister, so she wasn't worried about anything.
This Charlie thing reminds me of that. It is hard to fathom how someone I have never heard of is suddenly so important that our freedom of speech rights are being threatened. I didn't think that anyone was that important.
This situation has escalated so much over 8 months.
