However there are very few traits more prevalent in humans (and most higher animals) than an instinct to compete. Therefore I postulate this tendency to apply labels in such a way is also genetic, and that humans have always been doing this, and that therefore the hyper-competitive state of current human society is an "effect", rather than a "cause", if you will
