The Trump administration is ramping up its resettlement of White South Africans while simultaneously moving to bar entry for refugees from countries that fall under the president’s travel ban, according to a document reviewed by The Washington Post and a court filing.

Officials are moving to block refugees that a federal judge had ordered the administration to allow in after President Donald Trump ground the refugee resettlement program to a halt, according to a Justice Department record submitted in a court proceeding. About two-thirds of the 160 refugees that were expected to be permitted to enter are being blocked, a major refugee aid group said. Those refugees had been scheduled to travel to the U.S. within two weeks of Trump’s Jan. 20 executive order halting all refugee admissions.

The travel ban also would apply to the more than 12,000 refugees who had flights booked for U.S. travel after Feb. 3 and who a federal judge said must be allowed in on a case-by-case basis, under the appointment of a special master. It is unclear how many of those refugees are affected by the travel ban......

A State Department spokesperson said officials are “prioritizing U.S. refugee resettlement of Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination” while also funding for “a variety of programs and activities aimed at providing humanitarian assistance.”

“Refugees continue to depart South Africa on commercial flights as part of the Department’s successful efforts to resettle Afrikaners seeking safe haven in the United States,” the spokesperson said.

The Trump administration says the travel ban is needed to address national security concerns, citing terrorism and public safety risks in his proclamation, as well as to help curb the number of people who may come to the U.S. and overstay their visas.
