6. Trump isn't a terribly smart man,

but he is a master bully with decades of experience. Republicans never saw anyone like him rise to political power before and were not prepared for it. Plus, they evidently never had the courage of their convictions and I'm sure even Trump was amazed at how easily they fell in line.

I suppose if all those republicans were ever the great patriots that they claimed to be, they wouldn't have been so easily swayed. It turns out all those pocket constitutions and flag pins were just for show; they don't really believe in anything except political power. Of course, in some cases, I'm sure there was damaging kompromat involved as well.
