It could be pilotless. If it were piloted by beings, how would they be able to solve the time problem? If they spend a year at the speed of light, they would come back to their home planet hundreds or thousands of years in the future. They would age in real time, but everything else would be sped up to them.

We're not being visited by any living aliens, I guarantee it.

That I disagree with. None of us can be certain. Someone from 1750 might have said the same thing about airplane flight, or a person on the moon.
