If there is anything disqualifying that he hasn’t mentioned, if he hasn’t mentioned it to them by now, he wasn’t going to volunteer it to anyone. It was a pointless question to ask, because he wasn’t going to answer “yes” whether that was true or not.

It’s the fact that they felt obligated to pose that question publicly that is the news, not his answer. If he was going to answer “yes,” his withdrawal from the race would already be fading from the headlines, something that seems more and more worth reading between right about now.

Holding a meeting like that doesn’t settle the question. It raises it louder than before. Platner should be happy that there are only five days left until the primary. I’m not sure that the rest of Maine should feel so reassured, but that’s for the voters there to decide.
