Californias Department of Education told the Trump administration on Monday that it will not sign a resolution agreement that would have required the state to ban transgender athletes from competing on teams that match their gender identity, and issue apologies to biologically female athletes whod lost competitions to transgender girls.
Last month, the U.S. Department of Education announced it had found Californias Department of Education and the California Interscholastic Federation, the entity that governs high school sports, were violating Title IX by allowing transgender athletes to compete on teams that match their gender identity. The landmark federal law prevents sex discrimination in public and private schools that receive federal funding. The federal agency did not release its investigation or provide any details articulating how it made the determination.
The Trump administration said it was offering California the chance to come into compliance within 10 days by banning transgender girls from girls sports, and restoring any prize won by a transgender athlete to the next-placing biological female athlete.
In a two-sentence response Monday, the California Department of Educations general counsel told the federal Department of Educations Office of Civil Rights that it disagreed with its analysis, and will not sign the Proposed Resolution Agreement.
