In reply to the discussion: Trump Says Construction of His 'Triumphal Arch' Will Begin 'Sometime in the Next Two Months' [View all]peppertree
(23,225 posts)64. Yes - but in ruins

According to the Wackypedia article on the eyesore, it was bombed by leftists rebels in 1989 - and by treasure hunters in 2002.
That second bombing was the more destructive one.
They mistakenly believed that a massive hoard of gold was hidden there - part of the notorious Yamashita's gold cache that a number of Japanese politicians have reputedly had each other killed over the years on account of, and which MacArthur and Al Haig are also said to have drawn from through the CIA-run "M-fund" (the Philippines, you'll recall, had been occupied by Japan).
Remember the incident in which Old Man Bush threw up over the Japanese PM in '92? Disputes over the management of the M-fund were said to be high on the agenda on that trip - albeit secretly.

Whose "triumph" will it celebrate? Trump has not triumphed over anything, least of all his monumental ego.
