Burke left Sherlock Holmes and the role was taken over by Edward Hardwicke, who Burke recommended.

He left to prioritize family and so that he and his wife, Anna Calder-Marshall, could join the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He starred in these BBC Shakespeare productions.
