How the HELL did anyone ever become convinced that this was a good thing to do?

How come no one responded: "Fire for cooking my meat? Sure. Fire for cooking my lungs? Nah, bro; I'm good."

"Breathe. In. The. Smoke? Do you know how many people have died in house fires desperately trying to breathe in something other than smoke?"

People are still dying from this, and there's nothing I can do about it.
