There were plans, decades ago, to build an incinerator to magically take care of trash locally (rather than dumping it into the landfill.) Then, plans to start a recycling program started up. Ecologists pointed out that the proposed incinerator would require a larger garbage stream, so, garbage would need to be imported (from somewhere…) to make it work, and much of what was intended to be recycled (i.e. paper, cardboard) would need to be incinerated to make the heat to burn the rest. Residents imagined lines of garbage trucks coming to the area, an incinerator, right in a rural town, pumping God knows what into the air.

However, contracts had already been signed to build the incinerator. Thus began a long political and legal battle.

Today, between recycling and composting, much less “stuff” is going into the landfill, but the mound does continue to grow…
