8. 18" diameter works well but i use a few 12" if i need more

the bigger ones allow a subplanting of marigold or onion.

i like "determinate" varieties like the "celebrity" for contauners but they still need to be staked.

the containers need watering nearly every day and frequent miracle grow.

the volunteers are proving that they are well adapted right where they are. i'd stake them up right where they are growing.
