9. 18" diameter pots sound like a good size for the volunteers

and I have a few of those. I'm glad to hear that 12" also would work minus the marigolds. I'll run out of 18" pots because there are so many. I see a lot of tomato sauce in my future lol.

Leaving the volunteers where they are is good advice, but it isn't an option. You wouldn't believe where some of the tomato volunteers appeared. For instance, in the container with a very tall peace rose. Silly tomato volunteers.

You're right about daily watering. I water every day when temperatures are 90 or above. The vicissitudes of container gardening.

Note to self: next year try "celebrity" variety based on recommendations by rampatrc and Johnny's Selected Seeds.
