        Hard floors and carpet.  I have read that the vacuum cleaner has resulted in a world of change for flea-human relations, and flea populations everywhere.  But if the fleas reoccur, you can buy pesticide bombs for your house.  They work, although its of course better to avoid if you can.  
And keep the cat inside. They live longer that way.
