Many of the girls didn't realize they were being abused until they got a little older and left his supervision. I suppose the Red Curtain countries had a different attitude towards the coaching of their young athletes, both boys and girls.

Many stories have come out after the Wall came down in 1990, young athletes in Russia, Hungary, East Germany, Romania, etc. who were given little freedom and a lot of emotional abuse. Bela Karolyi became a coach during that era, and he achieved success using those methods. Even though he defected to the US and became a successful coach here, he still treated young athletes with the same methods he knew from Romania.
