Target: Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
Goal: Do not support the inclusion of book designed to teach benefits of biotechnology in elementary school curricula
As the public becomes more and more educated about the dangers of genetically modified foods, the outcry against biotechnology giants like Monsanto has grown louder and louder. Facing a future decline in profits, Monsanto has done what any savvy conglomerate would do: begun targeting future generations of consumers.
In partnership with Dow, Bayer Pharmaceuticals and five other major biotech companies, Monsato has released the Biotechnology Basics Activity Book. This 16-page book includes word scrambles, fill-in-the-blank puzzles and matching games that are designed to teach children the benefits of biotechnology, despite the recent findings of scientists from all disciplines. Genetically modified foods have been linked to autoimmune diseases, reproductive problems and organ damage, among others. The use of factory farms (a side effect of the higher yield biotech industry) is causing devastation to family farmers across America and irreparable damage to the environment, and yet the Biotechnology Basics Activity Book proclaims:
biotechnology is helping to improve the health of the Earth and the people who call it home, on its very first page.
The inclusion of a teachers guide in Monsantos activity book suggests that this guide is intended for inclusion into elementary school curricula across the country. The implementation of this book into school programs implies that the information contained within it is true. This is not the case. Our children should not be exposed to the lies of a company unconcerned with the health or well-being of our environment or society and purely driven by their own bottom-line.
