Rick Scott said something they liked and they went "YAY!", then reporters dug into things he'd said in the past and there was something that made them go "BOO!" Rinse and repeat for Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, John Huntsman, Michelle Bachmann, Buddy Roemer, and Trump's unofficial trial balloon.

Outside the clown car, Mitt steadily scapped up delegates while the rest were scattered amongst the clowns, and in the end he came out with enough to win the nomination.

That's part of why, in 2016, Trump was straight out of the gate with full-on racism (in addition to, y'know, actually being a bigot), and he got those people to rally around him right off the bat.
