Vance has become their creation. He is the junior high school "nerd" whose only hope of "breaking out" and gaining acceptance was to align himself with the bullies--whomever they might be. He thought he could become them by going to war with the military (though he had a clerical role and was protected throughout from combat), and he was smart enough to attend Harvard and to leverage his childhood into a lauded book/movie.
