Making an obsession of it is, as you said, a bit nuts. But being prepared for events with significant probabilities of happening is certainly not. We mainly stock up in the winter. Partially because we don't like going out much when it's near zero and snowy for days, and can both work hybrid when the weather's bad. Mainly due to a 35" one day, very wet and heavy snow we had several decades ago, with power out for a solid week. We decided then to never get caught short again.
So buying a little extra and having some cash on you in case of emergencies isn't nuts. It's wise. Particularly with a madman in the White House.
