Do you know how to left you have to be to win as a Republican in Vermont? He's not far left but it is fair to consider him a liberal Republican. It wasn't always that way meaning being a blue state. Up until Bush or Clinton Vermont mostly voted for Republican for President which is why it surprised national media a Democratic Socialist won in Burlington in the 80s.
