Wings' Azzi Fudd ties Caitlin Clark with incredible outburst

Azzi Fudd had a statement to make.

The 2026 No. 1 overall WNBA Draft pick hadn't begun her career with the Dallas Wings that well. But she stepped into New York City on Sunday to play the New York Liberty at Barclays Center, and that was the stage she needed.

Out of nowhere, Fudd erupted for 17 points in a quarter.

It tied Caitlin Clark for the most points in a quarter this season

Sanders (I) and Ocasio-Cortez Try Boosting Progressives in Red Districts

As Democrats fight for control of Congress, prominent left-wing politicians including Mr. Sanders of Vermont and Ms. Ocasio-Cortez of New York are increasingly inserting themselves into primary races to elevate progressives in competitive battleground districts.

That’s a departure from the progressive playbook of years past, which generally focused on backing candidates in deep-blue turf where campaigns tended to focus more on liberal ideology and less on electability in general-election contests.

The effort aims to rebut the conventional wisdom that running moderate Democrats who appeal to centrists and Republicans with middle-of-the-road policies is the best strategy in competitive races. Now, progressives are saying that candidates with policies aimed at helping working families and critiquing the wealthy can win anywhere.

Running candidates who “have the guts to stand up for the working class,” Mr. Sanders said in an interview, should be a “winning formula in almost every part of the country.”

TX-35: DCCC targets Maureen Galindo ("D") with 11th-hour ad buy

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is going up on the air with ads attacking Democratic congressional candidate Maureen Galindo in Texas, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: Galindo has been widely disavowed by Democrats over antisemitic remarks. She most recently said she wants to convert an ICE facility into her district into a "prison for American Zionists."....

House Democrats had been urging the DCCC to more directly intervene, though a source said the spending had already been in the works before those conversations.

Driving the news: The DCCC is launching a $35,000 ad buy against Galindo ahead of the May 26 runoff, a spokesperson told Axios.

Baraka backs Engel for Essex County Commissioner

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has endorsed Deborah Engel, a former deputy mayor of Maplewood, for one of four at-large Essex County Commissioner seats.

Baraka is already backing Marques-Aquil Lewis in a six-candidate race that includes four candidates who won the Essex County Democratic convention: Verona Councilwoman Christine McGrath, Livingston Mayor Shawn Klein, West Orange Democratic Municipal Chairman Abdur R. Yasin, and incumbent Wayne Richardson.

“Deb Engel understands the real challenges working families and small businesses across Essex County are facing right now,” Baraka stated. “She knows that issues like affordability, infrastructure, flooding, and transportation don’t stop at municipal borders, and she understands the importance of bringing communities together to solve problems.

Engel, running with the Essex Reform Democrats slogan, has the backing of South Orange Mayor Sheena Collum and a group of current and former elected officials in Maplewood, Bloomfield, and South Orange.

MI-AG, MI-SOS: Bipartisan group wants to change elections for university boards and 2 top state offices

A bipartisan group of lawmakers and two former governors has called for a sweeping overhaul of how Democratic and Republican nominees for Michigan attorney general and secretary of state are selected, as well as removing the selection of candidates for the boards in charge of Michigan’s three largest public universities from party conventions.

A resolution introduced this week in the state House of Representatives would amend the Michigan Constitution would give the governor the power to name members of the boards of Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University, subject to state Senate approval. That is the system used already for Michigan’s 12 other public universities. The amendment would also switch from party convention nominations to primary elections for attorney general and secretary of state.

Democratic and Republican gubernatorial candidates are already chosen in party primaries and supporters of the resolution to expand that to two more state offices say that the result would be stronger candidates.

Two former governors of both parties quickly endorsed extending to future governors the power to appoint members of public university boards.

CA-GOV: More Big Tech money pours in to California governor candidates in race's final weeks

The primary election for California governor is 12 days away, and millions of dollars are still being dumped into the race.

This battle to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom has shaped up to be an expensive one. Eight candidates, six Democrats and two Republicans, are battling it out, and spending the big bucks on TV ads and mailers to get their messages across until the bitter end. There has been a combination of funding sources for the Democrats: Billionaire Tom Steyer is funding his own campaign, former Rep. Katie Porter refuses to take corporate PAC money, San Jose Matt Mahan is raking in millions from Silicon Valley.

Longtime Democratic strategist Garry South, who has worked on four governor’s races dating back to former Gov. Gray Davis’ campaign, told SFGATE in a call Wednesday that any money coming into the race in the final weeks is unlikely to sway voters much.

“Early money is always more important than late money in campaigns,” said South. “The reason is that by the last month or few weeks voters are inundated and start tuning it out.”

CA-11: Chakrabarti taps nearly $10 million of personal wealth to succeed Pelosi

Centimillionaire Saikat Chakrabarti has kept his money spigot flowing freely in his quest to succeed U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, personally contributing or loaning almost all of the $10.3 million his campaign had raised as of May 14.

The nearly $5 million Chakrabarti had poured into his campaign since April 1 was again more than what all that of his competitors combined raised during the period as they marched toward the June 2 primary. The top two vote getters will advance to the November election to represent San Francisco's District 11.

Chakrabarti has the advantage of a more than $150 million fortune won as an early engineer at the payments processing company Stripe. His campaign had spent more than $8.8 million - about the amount he had loaned it - by May 13, bringing its cash on hand to just under $385,000. The next day, Chakrabarti made a $1.1 million contribution.

In addition to tapping his own funds, Chakrabarti had received just under $56,000 in direct contributions from individual supporters for the period, bringing his total of direct contributions to nearly $417,000.

Arizona AG rips Maricopa County election official over handling of non-citizen voting claims

An attorney from Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes’ (D) office had to threaten Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap, a known election denier, with legal action in order for him to hand over names of dozens of voters he claims are non-citizens.

Heap is known for spreading false information about voter fraud and Arizona’s 2020 election results. When he announced in February that he had uncovered the names of 137 non-citizens registered to vote, Mayes’ office reminded him of his legal obligations to refer the names to her staff.

However, Heap just turned the names over today, as first reported by Votebeat, after Mayes’ office sent two letters reprimanding him for failing to follow legal procedures that say he should have turned them over to her office within 35 days. To find the names, Heap used the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database, which is known to flagging eligible citizen voters as non-citizens.

This is just the latest example of Heap’s mishandling of elections administration processes, a pattern for which he’s been accused of working to undermine voter confidence.

CA-11: Ilhan Omar Endorses Saikat Chakrabarti In California House Race To Replace Nancy Pelosi

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) endorsed Saikat Chakrabarti in the race to win retiring Speaker emerita Nancy Pelosi’s California seat on Friday.

“I’ve known Saikat for years and know he has the integrity, courage, and principles this moment demands,” Omar said. “He will fight for Medicare for All, getting big money out of politics, and fundamentally changing the system. He’s the only candidate in this race not beholden to corporations, the Israel lobby, or careerism. I look forward to working with him in Congress.”

Omar is the second member of “The Squad” to endorse Chakrabarti, the former campaign manager and chief of staff for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). The tech millionaire nabbed an endorsement from Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) earlier this week.

“Honored to earn Rep. Ilhan Omar’s endorsement,” Chakrabarti said in a statement. “I first met her at a time when Trump was attacking her personally on a daily basis, and even then, I never saw her flinch once — Rep. Omar is fearless. She has the determination and resolve to fight for what is right against the greatest of odds, and she has taken huge personal risks in doing so.”

A.I. Videos Help Reality TV Antagonist Break Through in L.A. Mayor's Race

The video opens with the Hollywood sign engulfed in flames.

Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles sits on a throne, her face painted like that of the Joker. She’s flanked by Gov. Gavin Newsom of California and former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Cut to Spencer Pratt, the MTV reality television star turned Los Angeles mayoral candidate, styled as Batman with “SP” on his chest, leading an angry crowd that throws rotten tomatoes at the politicians.

“LA is worth saving,” reads a caption at the end. “Vote Spencer Pratt.”
